TRIBUTE TO HURRICANE KATRINA PETS AND OWNERS AT STRUT-A-MUTT May 12, 2006
JUPITER, FL -- On Saturday, May 20, owners and pets will come together
during Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary & Hospital’s Fourth Annual
Strut-A-Mutt to pay tribute to Hurricane Katrina animals that were rescued and
South Florida families who adopted them. The Strut-A-Mutt will take
place at 8:00 a.m. at the Abacoa Town Center in Jupiter. The Hurricane
Katrina Tribute will take place at approximately 10:30 a.m. KOOL
105.5’s Mo and Sally will be on hand for the event.
“We are walking for all the people and pets that perished in last
year’s devastating hurricane that made landfall in the Gulf State Region,”
said Safe Harbor’s Executive Director Kay-Lynette Roca. “Many of the
animals that we recovered after the storm were found in the poorest
regions of Louisiana and Mississippi.”
Last year, Roca and ten members of her staff drove to the Gulf State
Region after Hurricane Katrina made landfall on Aug. 29, 2005. A total
of 20 dogs and 11 cats were brought back to Safe Harbor’s headquarters
to be medically treated, and then placed for adoption.
Approximately ten families who adopted the recovered Hurricane Katrina
dogs and cats will be on hand to share details about life with the
recovered pets.
“These families have such great stories to share about how much they
love these dogs and cats,” said Roca. “It’s a testament to the bond
that happens between an owner and pet, and a reminder to everyone that we
still have many more animals that are looking for loving homes in our
shelter right now.”
To encourage people to adopt a dog or cat from Safe Harbor’s shelter,
anyone who registers for the Strut-A-Mutt will be able to adopt an
animal for $40 versus the regular $80 adoption fee. In addition, anyone
who adopts a Safe Harbor dog or cat on Saturday, May 20 or Sunday, May 21
from Safe Harbor’s shelter or Petsmart in West Palm Beach (2505
Okeechobee Boulevard) will also be entitled to the 50 percent reduction.
The fee to adopt an animal from Safe Harbor covers the spay or neutering
of the animal, microchipping and vaccinations.
Registration for the Strut-A-Mutt costs $35 and includes a pancake and
bagel breakfast and giveaways. Walkers can also register their pets
for a costume contest for $5.00. For more information, please call Safe
Harbor at 561-747-5311 or go online at www.safeharboranimalrescue.com.
SAFE HARBOR PAYS TRIBUTE TO IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HURRICANE KATRINA PETS/OWNERS AT April 26, 2006
FOURTH ANNUAL STRUT-A-MUTT
JUPITER, FL -- On Saturday, May 20, Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary &
Hospital will host their Fourth Annual “Strut-A-Mutt” at Abacoa Town
Center. The fun walk/run will take place from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
During the event, Safe Harbor’s Executive Director Kay-Lynette Roca
and KOOL 105.5’s Mo and Sally will pay tribute to the Hurricane Katrina
dogs and cats, and the South Florida families who adopted them.
In addition, with less than two weeks outside of Hurricane Season
2006, Roca and her staff will have hurricane preparedness advice for owners
to prepare their pets.
On Friday, September 9, 2005, Roca and ten Safe Harbor staff members
drove a convoy with 10,000 pounds of animal supplies to Mississippi and
Louisiana. There, they helped animal rescue organizations search and
recover displaced animals that were left after Hurricane Katrina made
landfall on August 29, 2005.
Thirteen dogs and seven cats were recovered and brought back to Safe
Harbor. On Friday, Sept. 30, 2005, a second convoy armed with 5,000
pounds of animal supplies traveled to the region. An additional seven
dogs and four cats were rescued and brought back.
“At Safe Harbor, we take animal welfare and safety extremely serious,
wherever the animal may be,” said Roca. “We want to say thank you and
pay tribute to the families who stepped forward and adopted these
rescued animals. In addition, we want to recall how these dogs and cats not
only lived in some of the poorest areas in the region, but had endured
one of the most horrific weather disasters of our time.”
Roca adds that poor weather conditions also had a direct negative
effect on the 20th Annual Celebrity Dog Wash.
“Due to Hurricane Wilma, we were forced to postpone the 20th Annual
Celebrity Dog Wash from the weekend of November 5, 2005, to the weekend
of Feb. 11, 2006. Then on that Sunday, Feb. 12, South Florida endured
record low temperatures, which had a devastating effect on our
attendance,” said Roca. “Our sincere hope is that people will register for the
Strut-A-Mutt at $35, secure additional sponsors, and help us recover
some of our financial losses during the Celebrity Dog Wash.”
In addition to the fun walk/run and Hurricane Katrina tribute, Safe
Harbor will also host a pet costume contest, raffle prizes and a
breakfast.
Sponsors of the event include IHOP of Jupiter, Starbarks in Jupiter,
KOOL 105.5 and Starbarks in Jupiter. For more information, please call
Safe Harbor at 561-747-5311.

The animals are currently under quarantine and will be available for
adoption on a case-by-case basis .
Roca and her staff are planning to return to the Gulf States during
the last week in September to deliver supplies and rescue more animals.
On Friday, September 9, Roca and her staff drove 13 hours to the
ravaged New Orleans area, armed with 10,000 pounds of animal supplies. Once
there, Roca witnessed firsthand the devastation that the people and
their animals have endured since Hurricane Katrina made landfall on Aug.
29. Roca described how other animal rescuers found animals tied to
trees or stakes, or laying on corpses in the middle of flooded streets.
“We (Safe Harbor) have been there for the community during Hurricane
Andrew, Jeanne and Frances, and now this year‘s Katrina,” said Roca.
“What I want to emphasize, if I could, is that we are here to serve the
animals, whether in our own background or in another part of the
country. If you are an animal supporter and share in our mission of giving
these animals hope, please help us - either as a volunteer, through your
donations or financial support.”
Safe Harbor began collecting supplies and money to take to the Gulf
States on Tuesday, September 6 and will run through the week of September
12. Anyone interested in donating supplies, making a financial
contribution or volunteering as a dog walker, can stop by Safe Harbor Animal
Sanctuary & Hospital at 185 E. Indiantown Road. Supplies needed
include: dog and cat food, bird seed, water, manual can openers, blankets,
paper towels, towels, collars, leashes and animal shampoo.

SAFE HARBOR'S "WALK FOR PATCHES" IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SHEDS LIGHT ON ANIMAL ABUSE MARCH 31, 2005
JUPITER, FLA -- On Saturday, April 16, Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary & Hospital will host their third annual Strut-A-Mutt Fun Walk/Run at Abacoa Town Center in Jupiter. The walk/run will be hosted in honor of "Patches," a severely malnourished and critically abused pit bull, used as part of an illegal gambling ring.
Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. Walkers/runners and their leashed pets will proceed through designated sites around The Abacoa Town Center. Registration is $35 and includes a free breakfast and a t-shirt. Walkers/runners are encouraged to go out and seek additional pledges for their participation.
On Feb. 24, a female driver saw an approximate 1-year old pit bull trying to crawl out of a ditch on Pratt Whitney Road. The dog, now known as Patches, was taken to Safe Harbor and is being treated for malnutrition, a dislocated jaw, and 50 puncture wounds to its face and ears. In addition, the pads of Patches two front feet were chewed off. Used as a "bait" dog, prosthetics will be needed to be built for Patches.
Donors have called Safe Harbor and pledged their financial support after watching and reading about Patches on their local news. Pamela Whitmore and her daughter, Lileh of Boynton Beach raised $350 and AmComp employees in North Palm Beach raised $900.
"We are so grateful to these wonderful, caring people who have committed to helping Patches," said Safe Harbors Executive Director Kay-Lynette Roca. "But how many more Patches are out there suffering in ditches, tied to trees, sitting in cages, that we don't even know about? Patches is our beacon in shedding light on animal abuse and pit bull rings and how they have to stop. I encourage everyone to come out and walk for Patches."
