Devastating Fire at Safe Harbor
March 18, 2008
In the early morning hours of Friday, March 14, 2008, Safe Harbor's Animal Hospital went up in flames. In spite of the heroic efforts of Jupiter Police, Palm Beach County Firefighters and Safe Harbor staff, 14 animals perished. Six cats and two dogs survived the inferno and are expected to ultimately recover. Thanks to the quick response of the firefighters, Safe Harbor's Dog Adoption Shelter located next door and the forty plus dogs residing there were spared.
Click here to see some photos of the damage.
The damage to the Hospital is
devastating. The lobby and front half of the Hospital are in charred
ruins. The rear portion has been severely damaged by smoke and heat.
The Dog Adoption Shelter is without power and the air is heavy with the
lingering smell of smoke. As a result, our dogs have been removed from
the Shelter and are temporarily in the loving homes of volunteers who
came forward to open their homes and their hearts to these animals in
need.
Now, with the help of staff and volunteers, we at Safe Harbor are
standing up, dusting off the ashes, and starting over. We are
rebuilding our hospital and are expecting it to be better than ever. In
order to do this, we will need the continued support of the the
community. Thanks to the donations of our supporters, we have filled
our storage resources to overflowing with dog and cat food, bedding and
cleaning supplies. At this point, our needs are primarily financial.
Any monetary donations, large or small, will be gratefully accepted.
Your tax deductible donation can be made via our website at
www.safeharboranimalrescue.com, in person at Suite 205, by phone at
(561) 747-5311, or by mailing a check to: Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary
& Hospital, 185 E. Indiantown Rd., #205, Jupiter, FL 33477.
As our Adoption Cattery is across the shopping center from our
Hospital, it was not impacted by the fire. Cat intakes and adoptions
will continue uninterrupted. The phone number to Safe Harbor's Cattery
is (561) 747-7676. At this time, however, we are asking that intakes to
our Dog Adoption Shelter be limited to those of a life or death nature.
Questions concerning Dog Shelter intakes may be addressed by calling
(561) 747-5311.
Until our Hospital is reconstructed, we will be relocating our
veterinary services to Suite 222 at Seagrape Square. Our Surgery is
undamaged as it is located in our Boarding Facility and will continue
to be open by appointment for spay / neuter and other surgical
services. We anticipate our temporary veterinary hospital to be open
for business on Monday, March 24, 2008. Appointments can be made by
calling (561) 747-1598 Extension 1. Please continue to support Safe
Harbor's Animal Hospital as the revenue generated by our veterinary
services are crucial to our mission of helping animals in need.
Words cannot express the gratitude those of us at Safe Harbor feel for
the outpouring of support from the community. Without the generosity
and compassion expressed by so many of you, this tragedy would have
been almost unbearable. Your support has truly given us strength.
Thanks to you, our supporters, Safe Harbor will rise from the ashes of
this disaster to be better and stronger than ever!

SAFE HARBOR RECEIVES $5,000 FROM HOLM CHARITABLE TRUST
October 29, 2007
JUPITER, FL -- Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary & Hospital recently received $5,000 from the Holm Charitable Trust. Gerald and Susan Holm presented the check to Safe Harbor’s Executive Director Kay-Lynette Roca outside of Safe Harbor’s shelter on Indiantown Road.
The Holms responded to an appeal for financial support that Safe Harbor sent out to in August. With less than $37,000 available in Safe Harbor’s savings, the appeal asked people to donate to Safe Harbor during this very critical time. The Holms’ $5,000 check was one of the largest donations received.
“We are so grateful to the Holms and to every single person who responded to our appeal letter,” said Roca. “In our more than 21 years of serving the animals and community, this has been our worst and most critical time in terms of finances and keeping our doors open.”
“We like to make meaningful contributions to selected local charities,” said Gerald. “We met Kay-Lynette in April and have always been impressed with what Safe Harbor is doing here locally. We wanted to lend our support.”
Safe Harbor has encountered serious financial times due to health reasons (Roca suffered paralysis in April; Chief Veterinarian Dr. James Wells suffered a heart attack in May). In addition, the shopping plaza which headquarters Safe Harbor’s administration offices, clinic, shelter and boarding facility has been acquired by new owners.
“Anything that the community can do to help us financially is desperately needed at this time,” said Roca. “We are providing so many services to the community, first and foremost caring for the abandoned animals that are on our streets. We need help in order to continue our work.”
If you’d like to make a donation, you can go to Safe Harbor’s website at www.safeharboranimalrescue.com. Click on the Donate Now link found in the upper right hand corner. You can also send your donation to Safe Harbor, P.O. Box 1843, Jupiter, FL 33458.
On Saturday, Dec. 1, Safe Harbor will be hosting their Inaugural Holiday Festival. The event will kick off a month long celebration to have the public foster a dog or cat over the holiday season. In addition, there will be the Blessing of the Animals, photos with your pet and Santa, a silent auction, holiday pet costume contest, bake sale, complimentary food and beverage, and more. For more information, please call Safe Harbor at 561-747-5311. |
