Carrie is a Rottweiler and now 6yrs old, she was adopted when she was 2yrs old from Safe Harbor. Carrie was 68 pounds when she was adopted and now weighs in at 97 lbs.

Carrie has a sister which is a shitzu who was adopted at the age of 11 and she is now 12yrs old. Carrie has made tremendous strides with her social skills and learns more everyday! Carrie likes to swim in the pool and loves toys that squeak, and loves to take her nightly walk with her humans. Some say Rottweilers are mean and most are afraid of them, but she is a very sweet girl, and letting her know she can trust the family members, makes her feel safe. She has been a great addition to our Tequesta Family, and we say everyday we would absolutely get another Rottweiler! More should try it!!!!!!

Sasha, the 8 year old Shih Tzu was adopted from Safe Harbor in January by the Simpson Family. Roger and Lucinda were so delighted with Sasha that they wanted to find a friend for her. They went all the way to Tallahassee to rescue her brother, Pepper. As you can see in the photos, they are all one happy family!

"They are each with their Easter toys after sunrise service at the beach. We don't know what we would do without them and it's all because of you for finding us Sasha! THANK YOU!"

Jack & Marsha of Jupiter decided to add an additional member to their family when Jack started volunteering at Safe Harbor. Jack always enjoys taking dogs to the local dog park where he gets them exposure to potential adopters as well as helping them socialize with other dogs.

Keira, a shepherd/husky mix found herself at Safe Harbor after being hit by a car. She had one of her legs bandaged up for quite a while but as soon as the vets cleared her from medical care, Jack was able to take her to the dog park, as well on MANY overnight field trips to their house. She instantly became part of the family and that is when it was decided that they would adopt her! Bailey, their 15 year old golden retriever, now shares his home with Keira. Both dogs love spending their summers in New Hampshire where they enjoy swimming in the lake.

Samson, a lab mix came to Safe Harbor last December. He was featured on the Mo & Sally show as the 12th Stray of Christmas. Two kind people, Donna and Herb of Palm Beach Shores heard his story on the radio that morning and just had to check him out. This lucky guy, now named Sam is enrolled in Safe Harbor's Therapy Dog Class and as soon as he and his parents pass the test, they will be able to start visiting local hospitals and nursing homes!

If you are interested in enrolling in therapy dog classes please contact Linda Kender at 561-747-9704. Classes are held at the Palm Beach Paw Spa in Jupiter.

Sam Herb

A letter to Mo & Sally @ Kool 105.5:

Good Morning Mo & Sally,
Just wanted to update you on our wonderful Sam, who you brought to us via your show. He is the love of our lives. He has finished two obedience classes and tonight starts his "Delta Dog" class. When he finishes this class, he will go to nursing homes, hospice, and hospitals to visit patients.

Sam has a birth defect of bad hips (didn't form properly) and will have to have total hip replacement but that doesn't stop him. He is the most loving and happy dog.

Thank you again for telling us about Sam, and keep up the good work.

Donna, Herb & Sam Steinbarge
Palm Beach Shores

A note from Donna: It's Sam and Herb going for their morning walk in the rain when Mom goes to work. We love this dog. Thank you again.

Mike, Sheri, and Amanda Viola of Palm Beach Gardens were interested in adding a "large dog" to their happy household. It isn’t often that people come in requesting big dogs, so Safe Harbor was more than happy to introduce the Viola's to Rosie, a Labrador mix to them.

Rosie came to Safe Harbor in March of 2005. She had been hit by a car and rushed to the emergency clinic. When her owners were finally located, they surrendered her to Safe Harbor because they could not afford medical treatment. Rosie is now adjusting to living in luxury as a playmate to the Viola's daughter, Amanda. She doesn’t get to just play with Amanda though; she also loves playing with Muffie, the orange tabby cat, as well as Simba and Ruby, the almost-two-year-old Boxers. If you are interested in making a wonderful addition to your family, just like the Viola's did, then please come by our shelter to visit some of our many adoptables, or give us a call at 561-747-1598 ex.4.

Scott & Lucinda Peterson of Stuart, Florida, didn't care about his funky haircut and named former Safe Harbor resident Jax, Simba. He spends his days following Lucinda wherever she goes!

When Dan from Jupiter adopted Toby, formally Utopia from Safe Harbor four years ago, he fell in love.

Good thing, too, because she did a number on his house destroying a lot of his things. With lots of patience and understanding Dan worked with Toby and now she is a wonderful pet!

Dan has taught her how to stand up on her back legs and walk in circles for unlimited amounts of time to get a treat. He also spends a lot of time with her taking her on car rides and to the beach.

"Her favorite thing to do is to run", but what I like most of all about her, is that she's a love". Toby is a very lucky girl to have found her forever home with Dan. Thanks Dan!

The Yanover's of Juno Beach, and Costa Rica, adopted one of the dogs that came back from Safe Harbor's first trip to New Orleans. Renamed Tina, the black little mix has made a great companion to their first dog, Nikki which they rescued from St. Thomas. The two little girls have a blast playing with each other and love sharing their home together!

He is kind enough to allow his new owners to share their bed with him! He also enjoys relaxing by the pool, and sometimes even tries to go for a dip, even though he isn't very graceful about it!

Paige, of Lake Worth, started fostering a very sick rotti mix puppy that wasn't expected to make it past a couple days. She spent many hours up late with her and nursed her back to health.

Malkie is now 5 months old and is doing great! She has made a wonderful progress and loves all of the cats in her new home.

Needless to say, Paige has decided on keeping Malkie forever.

This is Winston; we adopted him a couple months ago from Safe Harbor. He was a part of the Rotti litter that was born there, and I think he may be related to Malkie!

Winston is 5 Months old and doing great, he’s growing so fast and weighs about 38 pounds right now. He’s such a smart boy and already knows sit, stay, shake and lay down. He loves to play with other dogs and his cat roommate so much so that we wish we would have adopted one of his siblings as well! He is the best addition to our family we could have asked for!

Fire at Safe Harbor

In the early morning hours of Friday, March 14, 2008, Safe Harbor's Animal Hospital went up in flames. In spite of the heroic efforts of Jupiter Police, Palm Beach County Firefighters and Safe Harbor staff, 14 animals perished. Six cats and two dogs survived the inferno and are expected to ultimately recover. Thanks to the quick response of the firefighters, Safe Harbor's Dog Adoption Shelter located next door and the forty plus dogs residing there were spared.

Click here to see some photos of the damage.

The damage to the Hospital is devastating. The lobby and front half of the Hospital are in charred ruins. The rear portion has been severely damaged by smoke and heat. The Dog Adoption Shelter is without power and the air is heavy with the lingering smell of smoke. As a result, our dogs have been removed from the Shelter and are temporarily in the loving homes of volunteers who came forward to open their homes and their hearts to these animals in need.

Now, with the help of staff and volunteers, we at Safe Harbor are standing up, dusting off the ashes, and starting over. We are rebuilding our hospital and are expecting it to be better than ever. In order to do this, we will need the continued support of the the community. Thanks to the donations of our supporters, we have filled our storage resources to overflowing with dog and cat food, bedding and cleaning supplies. At this point, our needs are primarily financial. Any monetary donations, large or small, will be gratefully accepted. Your tax deductible donation can be made via our website at www.safeharboranimalrescue.com, in person at Suite 205, by phone at (561) 747-5311, or by mailing a check to: Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary & Hospital, 185 E. Indiantown Rd., #205, Jupiter, FL 33477.

As our Adoption Cattery is across the shopping center from our Hospital, it was not impacted by the fire. Cat intakes and adoptions will continue uninterrupted. The phone number to Safe Harbor's Cattery is (561) 747-7676. At this time, however, we are asking that intakes to our Dog Adoption Shelter be limited to those of a life or death nature. Questions concerning Dog Shelter intakes may be addressed by calling (561) 747-5311.

Until our Hospital is reconstructed, we will be relocating our veterinary services to Suite 222 at Seagrape Square. Our Surgery is undamaged as it is located in our Boarding Facility and will continue to be open by appointment for spay / neuter and other surgical services. We anticipate our temporary veterinary hospital to be open for business on Monday, March 24, 2008. Appointments can be made by calling (561) 747-1598 Extension 1. Please continue to support Safe Harbor's Animal Hospital as the revenue generated by our veterinary services are crucial to our mission of helping animals in need.

Words cannot express the gratitude those of us at Safe Harbor feel for the outpouring of support from the community. Without the generosity and compassion expressed by so many of you, this tragedy would have been almost unbearable. Your support has truly given us strength. Thanks to you, our supporters, Safe Harbor will rise from the ashes of this disaster to be better and stronger than ever!
